What is kiosk mode?

Device lock down, kiosk mode

Before You Start

Kiosk Mode is a security feature that restricts a mobile device or computer to a specific set of functions. By enabling Kiosk Mode via Trio, administrators can prevent users from accessing unauthorized apps, changing system settings, or exiting a designated environment. This is critical for dedicated-purpose devices such as point-of-sale (POS) systems, digital signage, or education tablets.

Kiosk Mode transforms a general-purpose device into a dedicated tool. When a device is in Kiosk Mode, the standard user interface (home screen, app switcher, and notifications) is replaced or heavily restricted.

Key Benefits:

  • Security: Reduces the attack surface by blocking access to browsers, system settings, and unapproved hardware ports.

  • Operational Efficiency: Ensures employees or customers only interact with the intended software.

  • Purpose-Driven UX: Ideal for POS systems, information hubs, and unattended digital displays.

Common Use Cases

  • Self-Service Kiosks: Bill payment stations, self-ordering at restaurants, and airport check-ins.

  • Information Hubs: Digital directories in malls or patient check-in kiosks in hospitals.

  • Education: Locking students into a specific testing app or educational game.

  • Digital Signage: Unattended displays for advertisements or public announcements.

  • Point of Sale (POS): Turning tablets into dedicated cash registers for retail and hospitality.

Kiosk Types in Trio

Trio supports multiple kiosk configurations tailored to specific use cases. Note: Feature availability varies by operating system (iOS, Android, Windows, MacOS).

  • Single-App Kiosk: The device is locked to exactly one application. If the app crashes or the device restarts, Trio automatically relaunches it. Users cannot exit the app without an administrative command.

  • Multi-App Kiosk: Users can access a selection of approved applications from a customized, branded home screen. All other apps and system settings remain hidden.

  • Web Kiosk: Restricts the device to a specific URL or a set of whitelisted domains. This is ideal for check-in stations or browser-based tools.

  • Digital Signage: A specialized "non-interactive" mode where the device acts as a video or image loop player. Trio disables touch input and hardware buttons to ensure content runs uninterrupted.

Notes

Kiosk Mode is a "hard" restriction. Always ensure you have a way to re-establish Wi-Fi connectivity if the device loses its connection.
