Managing and creating device tags

Learn how to create and manage tags in device lists.

Overview

Tags allow IT admins to organize devices into logical groups for easier management, reporting, and policy assignment. Whether you want to categorize devices by department, role, security status, or project, tags give you the flexibility to quickly filter and take action across large fleets.

With Tag Management, you can:

  • Create new tags for specific use cases.

  • Assign one or multiple tags to a device.

  • Remove or edit existing tags.

  • Use tags to filter reports, apply policies, and streamline compliance checks.

Accessing Tag Management

  1. Navigate to Fleet > Devices > Device List.

  2. Click Manage Tags (top right of the Device List).

This opens the Manage Tags panel, where you can see all existing tags, the number of devices they apply to, and options to edit or delete them.

Creating a New Tag

  1. In the Manage Tags window, click + Create Tag.

  2. Enter a tag name (e.g., Finance, Loaner, VIP).

  3. Select a color code for visual identification.

  4. Click Create Tag.

Best practice: Use clear, descriptive names that reflect how the tag will be used across policies or groups.

Editing Tags on Devices

To add or remove tags from multiple devices:

  1. Select one or more devices from the Device List.

  2. Click Actions > Edit tags (add/remove).

  3. In the Edit Tags for Devices window:

    • Use Add tags to apply new tags.

    • Use Remove tags to clear old or outdated ones.

  4. Click Save changes.

Organizing and Maintaining Tags

  • Use the search bar in the Manage Tags panel to quickly locate specific tags.

  • Rename tags to align with updated organizational structures.

  • Delete unused tags to avoid clutter.

Troubleshooting

  • Tag not visible on a device: Refresh the device list or check if the tag was assigned to the correct device.

  • Duplicate tags: Merge or rename tags to maintain consistency across the fleet.

  • Tags not applying policies: Verify that the tag is linked to the correct policy in Policy Management.

  • Bulk tag edits not saving: Ensure you have admin permissions and confirm that the devices are online.
