Create a new device group

Learn how to add a new device group in Trio.

Before You Start

Device groups help organize and manage your fleet by grouping devices based on platform, ownership model, or organizational structure. This enables efficient bulk actions and policy assignments across similar devices. You need Fleet Administrator or Device Manager permissions to create device groups. Ensure you have existing AutoPilot policies available for assignment and understand your device ownership models before starting.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Access Device Groups

Navigate to Fleet in your Trio dashboard, then select Device Groups from the left sidebar menu.

Step 2: Start Creating a New Group

Click the "Add new" button in the top right corner of the Device Groups page.

Step 3: Configure Group Details

Enter a descriptive name for your device group. Choose the target platform from the dropdown (Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, Linux). Select the device ownership model (COD for Corporate Owned Device, BYOD for Bring Your Own Device). Add an optional description for the group's purpose.

Step 4: Assign AutoPilot Policies

Click "Next" to advance to the Assignment step. Use the search bar to find specific AutoPilot policies. Select appropriate policies from available options like All Users, Remote Workers, Engineering Leads, Onboarding, Sales, Developers, or other organizational groups. Each AutoPilot shows software and device counts for reference.

Step 5: Complete Group Creation

Click "Finish and Save" to create the device group. A success message will confirm "A new device group has been created."

Next Steps

Immediate actions: Assign devices to your new group, configure group-specific policies, review compliance status as devices are added

Troubleshooting

  • Device group not appearing in list - Refresh the page and verify appropriate permissions

  • Cannot assign devices to group - Check devices match selected platform and ownership model

  • AutoPilot assignment failing - Verify selected policies are compatible with chosen platform

  • Group showing as non-compliant - Review assigned policies and device configurations

  • Platform filter not working correctly - Clear browser cache and ensure platform selection matches device types

  • Device count not updating - Allow time for synchronization or refresh the page

Notes

Device groups are organized by platform and ownership model combinations. Each group can have multiple AutoPilot policies assigned but policies must be compatible with the selected platform. Keep placeholders like {GroupName}, {Platform}, {AutoPilotName} intact for contextual replacement. Screenshots should be added exactly where indicated.
