Your VPP (App &amp; Book License) token from Apple Business Manager (or School Manager) expires annually. When it lapses, Trio can’t sync license counts or push app updates—so you’ll see “Failed to assign license” errors. Trio starts warning you 30 days before expiry and provides an in-product wizard to swap the token in minutes.

Open the renewal prompt ​MDM Setup → Apple → App &amp; Book Management (VPP) card → Renew Token. A pop-up shows your Apple ID and the exact expiration date.

Click Start Renewal to launch the side-panel wizard:

① Sign in to Apple Business/School Manager Link opens <a href="https://business.apple.com/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">https://business.apple.com</a>. Log in with the Apple ID shown in the modal. You’ll land in Settings → Payments &amp; Billing.

② Download Location Token In Content Tokens, click Download next to your location. You’ll get a <code>.vpptoken</code> file. The file contains the refreshed app-license token.

③ Upload Location Token Drag-and-drop (or Upload) that <code>.vpptoken</code> into Trio. Confirm Renewal becomes active. Click it to finish.

Success toast – “Apple App &amp; Book license connection successful.” App assignments and silent installs continue without interruption.

Trio emails Org Admins at 30/15/7/1 days before expiry and shows an in-app banner. Add a calendar reminder now so you can zip through the two-step renewal when the time comes. ​

Requirement	Why it matters
APNs certificate is valid	Needed for all Apple MDM traffic.
DEP token is current	ABM won’t let you download a VPP token if your MDM server has an expired DEP token.
Same Apple ID used during the original setup	Switching Apple IDs produces a brand-new token that severs existing license links.

Issue	Fix
Upload box rejects file	Ensure the file ends with `.vpptoken` and is less than 5 MB.
Token still shows “Not Connected”	Wait up to 10 minutes. If status doesn’t change, upload the same token again and click Confirm Renewal.
Used a different Apple ID by mistake	Download a new token with the original Apple ID or add a new Location in ABM, then upload that token.
