Update Settings Overview

The Update Settings section in Trio lets you centrally manage how OS and software updates are delivered across your organization's devices. Whether you're working with Android, iOS, macOS, or Windows, you can automate update checks, control installation behavior, set deferral rules, and prioritize critical patches—all from a single, unified dashboard. This ensures devices stay secure, compliant, and up to date with minimal manual effort.

Update Settings for Android

  1. Navigate to Security in the sidebar.

  2. Click on Vulnerability Center under the Security section.

  3. Go to the Update Settings tab at the top.

  4. Select the Android tab to configure update preferences.

1Enable OS Update

Toggle this on to allow Android system updates to be managed through Trio.

System Update Type

Use the dropdown to choose how updates are handled:

  • Automatic: Installs updates automatically.

  • Windowed or other options may appear based on device capabilities.

Freeze Period (Optional)

A Freeze Period lets you pause updates, useful during critical business times or exams.

  • Set a Start Date and End Date for the freeze.

  • Each freeze can last up to 90 days, with at least 60 days required between freeze periods.

  • Click Add to apply the freeze period to the list.

Note: While in a freeze period, all updates, including security patches, are blocked.

Software Updates (Apps)

Enable Software Update: Toggle this on to manage app updates on Android devices.

Set the Updating Frequency: Choose how often app updates are installed:

  • Choice for the user

  • Automatic

  • Scheduled (if available)

This lets you control whether end-users decide when to update apps or if it should be enforced by policy.

Saving Changes: Once your settings are configured:

  • Click Save in the top right corner to apply.

  • Click Cancel if you wish to discard changes.


Update Settings for iOS & iPad

Trio’s Patch Management feature allows you to automate iOS system and app updates across all managed Apple mobile devices. This ensures timely patches, reduced risk, and minimal manual work for IT teams.

Accessing iOS Update Settings

  1. In the sidebar, go to Security > Patch Management.

  2. Select the Update Settings tab at the top.

  3. Click the iOS tab to begin configuring settings for iPhones.

Automatic iOS & Software Updates:

  • Enable OS Update: Toggle this on to allow iOS system updates to be managed automatically via Trio.

  • When to Install Updates on iOS Devices: Choose the installation timing from the dropdown:

  • Default: Follows Apple’s system-defined schedule.

Note: Updates will follow Apple’s default behavior. You can review the status and timing under the Results dictionary.

Software Updates (App Updates)

Enable Software Update: Toggle this on to allow automatic app updates on iOS devices.

Software Update Presentation Mode: Select how app updates are presented to users:

  • Both options update: Installs updates silently or shows available updates, depending on user interaction and system permissions.

  • Other modes (if available) may give you more control over visibility or enforcement.

Saving Changes: Once you've made your selections:

  • Click Save in the top right to apply your settings.

  • Click Cancel to discard any unsaved changes.

The setting also applies to the iPads.


Update Settings for Windows

Trio’s Patch Management system helps you control how Windows updates are delivered across your device fleet. This ensures timely OS patches, security compliance, and reduced manual intervention.

Accessing Windows Update Settings

  1. Go to the Security section in the sidebar.

  2. Select Patch Management.

  3. Click the Update Settings tab.

  4. Open the Windows tab to manage Windows update preferences.

Windows OS & Software Update Options

  • Enable Windows OS Updates: Toggle this on to manage Windows OS updates from Trio.

  • Automatically Check for Updates: Choose how updates are installed and whether user control is allowed.
    Available options:

  1. Auto-install and restart without end-user control

  2. Notify before install

  3. Install during maintenance window (if configured)

Download Updates Over Metered Connection

Choose whether updates are downloaded on limited data networks (e.g., mobile hotspots).
Default: Auto install and restart without end-user control

Advanced Settings

Allow Optional Content: Toggle this on to allow updates that include optional features or experience packs.

Optional Content: Select whether or not the optional content should be received:

  • Receive

  • Don’t receive (default)

Allow Updates from Non-Microsoft Sources

Enable this to allow updates from approved third-party sources. This can be useful in enterprise environments using internal update repositories or approved software vendors.

Saving Changes: Once settings are configured:

  • Click Save to apply changes.

  • Click Cancel to discard any changes.


Update Settings for MacOS

Trio's Patch Management lets you automate macOS updates and app installations to ensure devices stay secure, up to date, and compliant, without disrupting users. Here's how to configure the macOS update policy.

Accessing macOS Update Settings

  1. In the left-hand sidebar, go to Security > Patch Management.

  2. Click the Update Settings tab at the top.

  3. Select the macOS tab.

Update Settings Overview

Toggle the following settings based on your organization’s update policy:

  • Enable macOS Updates: Turn this on to allow management of macOS updates.

  • Automatically Check for Updates: Enables regular background checks for available macOS updates.

  • Automatic Download: Allows updates to be downloaded silently in the background.

  • Automatically Install macOS Updates" Installs downloaded OS updates without user intervention.

  • Automatically Install App Updates: Keeps Mac apps updated automatically.

  • Install Critical Updates: Ensures urgent security updates are installed immediately.

  • Allow Pre-Release Installation: Let users receive beta or developer releases of macOS (use cautiously in production).

  • Restrict Software Updates (Requires Admin to Install): Prevents users from installing updates unless they have admin privileges.

  • Installation Preferences: Customize how and when updates are installed on macOS devices.

  • When to Install Updates: Select an installation policy:

  1. Install later

  2. Install immediately

  3. Default (uses Apple's standard behavior)

Note: macOS 10.11+ devices will download and notify users through the App Store.

  • User Can Defer Updates: Toggle this to allow users to postpone updates.

  • Maximum Update Deferral: Set how many times users can defer an update (default: 5 times).

  • Priority: Choose update urgency:

  1. Low: Regular update priority

  2. High: Use for critical or urgent patches

Saving Changes

Once configured, click Save in the upper-right corner to apply the policy. Use Cancel to discard changes.
