FileVault: A disk encryption program available on macOS that secures user data by encrypting the entire startup disk.

Encryption: The process of converting information into a code to prevent unauthorized access.

Decryption: The process of converting encrypted data to its original form, allowing access to the information.

XTS-AES-128: The encryption algorithm used by FileVault, provides strong protection for user data.

Startup Disk: The disk where the operating system is installed and from which the computer boots.

Recovery Key: A key that allows users to access their encrypted data if they forget their password.

Password: A secret word or phrase that is used to unlock encrypted data and access the system.

Disk Image: A file that contains the complete contents and structure of a storage device, used for backup or encryption.

macOS: The operating system developed by Apple for its line of Mac computers, which includes FileVault as a feature.

Security: Measures taken to protect information from unauthorized access or attacks.

User Account: An account on the Mac that has specific permissions, including access to encrypted files when logged in.

Encryption Key: A key used in the encryption and decryption process that ensures only authorized users can access data.

Whole Disk Encryption: A method of encrypting the entire disk, as opposed to just individual files or folders.

System Preferences: The application on macOS where users can configure settings, including enabling or disabling FileVault.

Login Window: The interface presented to users upon booting their Mac, where they enter their password to access the system.

Security & Privacy: A section in System Preferences where users can manage FileVault and other security settings.

Backups: Copies of data stored in a different location to prevent data loss; important to manage alongside FileVault.

Pre-boot Authentication: A process requiring users to enter their password or recovery key before the operating system loads.

Data Protection: Measures taken to safeguard data against unauthorized access, corruption, or loss.

Apple ID: A personal account used to access Apple services, which can also be associated with FileVault for account recovery options.
