Prerequisites for Setting Up a Trial Instance in Trio MDM

Learn how to set up a trial account in Trio MDM

Updated over 2 weeks ago

To successfully set up a trial instance in Trio MDM, please ensure you meet the following prerequisites based on the device types you intend to enroll.

1. Prerequisites for Android Devices

Google Account

  • A Gmail account is required to set up Android Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) for device enrollment.

2. Prerequisites for Apple Devices

Apple devices can be enrolled in one of two modes:

  1. Supervised Mode – Provides full control over the device, making it ideal for corporate-owned devices.

  2. Unsupervised Mode – Offers limited control, best suited for Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) scenarios.

Below are the prerequisites for each mode:

2.1 Supervised Mode (Corporate-Owned Devices)

Supervised mode allows organizations to fully manage and enforce policies on their devices.

Requirements:

Apple Business Manager (ABM) Account

  • Required to access the Device Enrollment Program (DEP) and Volume Purchase Program (VPP).

Apple Push Notification Service (APNs) Certificate

  • Enables secure communication between the MDM and Apple devices.

  • Requires an Apple ID with developer privileges.

Mobile Device Management (MDM) Solution

  • Required for configuring and enforcing policies.

  • Supported MDM solutions include Trio MDM.

DEP-Eligible Apple Devices

  • Devices must be purchased from Apple or an authorized reseller and linked to the organization’s ABM account.

Wi-Fi or Ethernet Connection

  • A stable network connection is necessary for over-the-air enrollment.

Supervision Configurations

  • Supervision can be set up via:

  • DEP (automated enrollment) – Recommended for corporate-owned devices.

  • Apple Configurator (manual method for non-DEP devices).

MDM Profile Assignment in ABM

  • Devices must be assigned an MDM profile in Apple Business Manager before activation.

Apple IDs for Managed Apple IDs (Optional)

  • Managed Apple IDs enable user-specific policies within ABM.

2.2 Unsupervised Mode (BYOD – Bring Your Own Device)

Unsupervised mode allows organizations to manage certain aspects of a device while maintaining user privacy.

Requirements:

Apple Push Notification Service (APNs) Certificate

  • Required for MDM communication.

MDM Solution

  • The MDM solution must support user-initiated enrollment.

User-Initiated Enrollment in Apple Business Manager (ABM)

  • ABM is mandatory even for BYOD enrollment.

  • Users must manually enroll their devices via:

  • Settings → General → VPN & Device Management

Wi-Fi or Cellular Connection

  • A stable network connection is required.

User Consent for Enrollment

  • Users must approve the enrollment process on their device.

Limited Control & Data Segmentation

  • Personal data remains private, while corporate apps and configurations are managed separately.

2.3 Additional Notes for Apple Enrollment

  • DEP enrollment is strongly recommended for corporate-owned devices to automate setup and management.

  • Unsupervised mode is best for BYOD (employee-owned) devices where full control is not required.

  • ABM enrollment takes approximately 2–3 weeks, so it is recommended to start the process early.

3. Prerequisites for Windows Device Enrollment

To enroll Windows devices in Trio MDM, please ensure the following requirements are met:

Windows 10 or Windows 11

  • The device must be running a supported version of Windows.

No Antivirus Installed

  • Any third-party antivirus software should be uninstalled before enrollment to prevent conflicts with MDM policies.

Device Must Not Be Enrolled in Another MDM

  • If the device is already enrolled in another MDM solution, it must be unenrolled before adding it to Trio MDM.

Next Steps

  1. Ensure all necessary prerequisites are in place before beginning the enrollment process.

  2. For Apple enrollment, initiate ABM registration early to avoid delays.
